There are 5 steps that every employee, whether a house cleaner or a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. These steps are Safety, Trust, Intimacy, Goals/Tasks and Mission/Vision. It takes several months, if not years, for a team to move through each of these steps. Your goal as company owner is to have your team, every employee who works for you, at the Mission/Vision step because then they are totally empowered and you can spend 90% of your time doing what Leaders should spend 90% of their time doing, growing and developing their company into next stage in their business life cycle.
The tricky part is that you are involved in your team’s progress through the steps and you aren’t involved. If your Supervisor/Team Lead does not want to, or know how to, generate a positive synergy within their team, the team cannot possibly move to the next step no matter how much you want them too. As soon as you are in their presence the synergy leaves and the team moves back to safety. In like respect, if the team is at the Intimacy level but you do something to upset one of the team members the entire team moves back to safety within your total company.
Think of actions you can take that will help to move your teams through the 5 steps. Write down everything you promise your employees and follow through on everything on a timely basis.
Have one-on-ones with your teams to be sure they are on track to move to the next step and to be sure you are not holding them up. Check weekly to see how you are doing.
Make a list of things that you can do to make your teams feel safe with you and your managers.
Have meetings for the full staff and Team Leads/Supervisors educating them on various ways to move their teams through the steps, the advantages of moving their teams through the steps and ‘Sharpening the Saw’ on a regular basis.
